HOME-SCHOOLING
Home Education Victoria
www.home-ed.vic.edu.au
Home
Education Network is a voluntary, non-profit organisation that provides
information and support for home educating families. Through our website, we advertise local,
interstate and overseas events, regular science and language classes
for home educated children, parent information nights and details of
local support groups and their individual events, supporting home
educators in Victoria, Australia..
We provide
information through our website, by posting out free information
sheets and we have recently started up a Free Online Home Education
Consultation Service. This service is run by experienced home educators
and you can have all your questions answered. Send us an email or phone
us and leave your contact details and we will have a consultant call
you back.
We encourage all groups and anyone who
wishes to start a group, give a workshop, start an art class, or a park
day in your area to advertise on this site. In this way we can build
strong communities for home educating familes to find friendship and a
sense of belonging with others who have chosen this path. It is this
contact that is so important for new and old home educators alike. It
encourages us, refreshes us and offers us wonderful friendships with
like-minded people.

Village School
provides a happy, flexible environment where the natural inclination to
learn is carefully fostered and education is a positive experience. The
environment is such that the child's innate curiosity about the world
around them is never stifled, so that the acquisition of knowledge is
perceived not as a necessary chore, but as a natural and enjoyable
process. School is an exciting place to be. The teacher/student
relationship is based on friendship, and on mutual respect and trust,
for the experience of the one and the freshness of approach of the
other. Children are encouraged to approach problems with open minds in
order to arrive at solutions by a process of creative thought, rather
than by attempting to make new situations fit to a set of preconceived
notions. Problems are posed, but the children do not expect magical
answers, and in working towards solutions, they discover the delights
of intellectual pursuits.

Coonara
Community School
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~coonara/
Coonara Community School was established in 1973 by a group of parents
who wanted to provide an alternative to traditional primary education
for their own children. Coonara now caters for up to 40 children aged
from 4 to 12 years in a small and caring environment, which enables
them to learn and grow at their own rate, socially as well as
academically.
The school is owned and operated by a non-profit Coperative Society
whose members are the parents of the children attending. There are
three core teachers, and sessional teachers for specialist subject
areas. The school relies heavily on parent involvement, and makes use
of local community facilities for activities such as swimming,
gymnastics, and library. The school is non-graded, so the children move
through the curriculum at their own rates of development, with
opportunities for both advancement and remediation.
Parent participation is vital to the "community spirit" at Coonara.
Rather than being excluded, parents are actively encouraged to
participate in classroom activities, excursions, camps, and social
functions. Parents are also reponsible for the operation and
maintenance of the school, whether by attendance at regular "working
bees", working behind-the-scenes, or by serving as a member of the
Board of Directors.

Erasmus School
www.erasmus.vic.edu.au
Erasmus School is
part of a worldwide group of schools, which in the spirit of the
Renaissance, draw inspiration from Plato and from the ancient teaching
of the Vedas. Erasmus School focuses on the great works of Humanity
while also teaching the 'Three R's'. Children from the age of five
recite Shakespeare, listen to Mozart, and learn Sanskrit. The school
teaches a Philosophy of Unity. Older children are also introduced to
the practice of meditation, leading them to inner peace and
contentment. Through love and discipline we awaken the true knowledge
and happiness that lies within. Fine art, the words of the wise, and
good literature all help children connect with this inner knowledge and
to find fulfillment.

Fitzroy Community
School
www.fcs.vic.edu.au
Fitzroy Community School was founded with
an emphasis on
self-confidence and communication skills. It has a broad curriculum, is
academically strong in English and Maths, and prominent in music,
sports and performing arts. The School has published its own English
materials, The Fitzroy Readers. Situated in Edwardian terrace houses
opposite the Edinburgh Gardens, the School has a homely environment. A
greater-than-normal level of personal freedom and responsibility is
given to students. There are plenty of outings, camps and guest
teachers. We have an international outlook, often with an overseas
guest teacher or assistant. Students who undertake their primary years
here, typically prosper at secondary level, both academically and
socially.
Our school is a community school and an alternative school. The school
is alternative in that lessons come second in importance in our school.
The most important thing is that the students in this school learn to
relate to each other in a way that, now and in the future will enable
them to live happy and successful lives. The school thus puts social
development before academic learning. The result of this is a
flourishing in both social and academic endeavour. The school is
special, a demonstration of how children can learn and grow. We love
it, and hope that you will too.

The School aims to
create an
environment where education is seen as a life long process involving
physical, emotional, intellectual and social development, and where
children and adults can relate to each other as people whose needs,
rights and responsibilities can be valued for the contribution they
make to each other. The School is parent run but child centred. As well
as attending fortnightly meetings, parents must organize an activity
for a group of children for a half-day each week. Children choose from
the activities offered by parents and the teacher. Free play is a
highly valued activity

fosters effortless, joyful, successful and fulfilling teaching and
learning. Maharishi School is part of an international association of
schools which recognise that the quality of the students' awareness -
their intelligence, creativity and receptivity to knowledge; their
sense of self and confidence in their capabilities; their ability to
comprehend both broadly and deeply - are fundamental to successful
educational outcomes. Ultimately, the degree of success in education
lies in the consciousness of the students and teachers. Our
Consciousness-Based system of education includes Transcendental
Meditation TM and an approach to education where all learning areas are
integrated by universal principles which uphold growth and progress in
the child as well as the environment. This has resulted in outstanding
academic achievements in the USA and UK because learning ability,
receptivity, intelligence and creativity are directly developed in all
students irrespective of their background, attitudes, gender or
abilities.

is based on a recognition of stages of development in childhood and the

that end is suitable for all and works towards encouraging individual
